HELL WEEK - "Miracle"

So I was behind for this show, the Iron Man Magazine Naturally NPC Competition. I never diet through the holidays and this was very rough for me. I also had gained a lot after San Jose. Coach told me not to do this show, but I'm not a quitter. These pics are taken 9 days out, Wednesday.

I went through 2) 3-day carb depletions, with very little carbs in between and leading up to the show.  It was crazy. I dropped a lot of water, and NEVER want to have to do that again. SO glad I have that behind me and 8 more weeks to train for Gov Cup.

The back pose was very painful for me to see, as I was shocked to see it this obvious at a heavier weight. I need to keep building muscle but I'm worried about how much more my body will shift, and how it will affect my spine.

Quick pre-blurb of Iron Man Magazine & Fit Expo

O_M_G! We had SUCH an AMAZING weekend! Although we did not bring home trophies, we have made some GREAT progress! I personally made eye contact with each judge and did NOT shake! First time ever. I did notice the changes in my body have definitely made my scoliosis more apparent and I am dealing with it as best I can.

The Expo...I have no words. I learned a LOT from the Pros who were helping & prepping us backstage, UNHEARD of at the amateur(NPC) level. Totally changing my Tanning procedure. Also, we got to meet and take photos with Jay Cutler(also learned a lot at his Q&A!), Ronnie Coleman, Alicia Marie(and got a sneak peak at her new Booty book which isn't even out yet!), and I got to meet one of my heroes Jim Stoppani, PhD from Muscle&Fitness and Flex Magazine and score some awesome 6-pack coolers from him! I can't wait to post pictures on my Page tomorrow, www.facebook.com/nmtfitness We took a LOT of great ones!

Well, now 8 weeks until Governor's Cup in Sacramento, March 24th. Crock pot is going and Im ready to Lift like an ANIMAL!!!! See what I got cookin' below.

I will follow up with separate blogs over the next few days covering the Competition, and the FitExpo and all our experiences.
Mashed Cauliflower: cauliflower, chicken stock/broth, garlic clove,
garlic salt. Crockpot low overnight, mash&mix.

Chicken Soup: chicken, short grain brown rice, broccoli, chicken
stock, garlic salt, paprika. Crock pot Low overnight

Ironman Naturally, -3 Days

Well, they're comin'....want some DEEP cuts for the next Comp!
Wow, today! I had originally thought I would be okay working through this week. I'm even teaching my classes, at least through tomorrow(Wednesday). But there were a few things I needed to do so I thought I'd give myself breathing room, boy did I NEED IT! I took today of and first item was SLEEP! I woke up at 11am. what?! Already behind. Guess what? I had forgotten to move my food from the freezer to the fridge or leave out to thaw. I needed to workout, but needed to eat food first. So, off to the store I went to get fresh tilapia and chicken for today.
Got my 4oz of chicken on my new scale. (Haven't unwrapped it yet, lol)

So I did a lot of cooking, did my YouTube blog for Today, went to the gym with mom, went to the chiropractor(I think she got my shoulder back even with the other), got my eyerows waxed, then came home and did some more cooking while doing a little Zumba in between. I vacuumed and am aiming to put some clothes away and pack a lil. Or add to my packing pile.
Looks like my spot's been taken... <3
My "Packing Pile" - Hmmm....what to wear. to party w/the girls after the show? ... ;)

I'm trying to catch up on meals. I am just about finished with my 2nd fill of my water jug(2.2L) This is Day 1 on my second carb-depletion. I won't have to do this again. I can NOT get behind and go crazy. I need to stay where I am at and continue my fine-tuning and progress from here to the next shows.
(2.2 Liters) x 2 !

Tomorrow I will go to work, then teach cycling @ Bally Total Fitness, then back to work, then back to Bally to teach BOSU, then back to Ray's Built Tuff for posing practice with Robin and train Leslie for her last workout. Tomorrow is the last workout day. Thursday and Friday we rest. Thursday I JUST go to work. Sounds SO simple! :D We do go to check in with Fatima at Ray's Built Tuff after work. Then we should be able to have some carbs to fill out. Friday we fly out. There will be me, Leslie(we are the 2 competing), Cori, Brenda(my former client and Bally class member) all on the same flight. SUPER fun! Becky might also be driving down, and my dad should be driving down.

4 DAYS(3 really)!! - Ironman Mag Naturally

Ok, I'm close! I checked in today and coach said I looked a LOT better, not there yet, but i will be! I got CARBS!!! So my last 4 meals today I got salmon(OMG, I used to HATE fish and I can't tell you how happy I was to get that, haha) and Brown rice/oatmeal. SO great! Tomorrow I go back to my carb depletion for another 3 days and we will check in again Thursday night. We will be getting our next food in preparation for a lil carb load Friday.

I loved working out today! Well, visually, lol. I have dropped 4lbs so I'm now 126lbs. And I got a mystic tan last night so I'm a bit darker. I'm starting to look like a competitor again. PHEW! When we check-in next I will post before/after pics so you can see the changes made in this last week. It's AMAZING what happens in the last week! :D

We basically workout to just maintain the muscle we have and get rid of the water. We workout through Wednesday, then Thursday and Friday we rest and carb-load while weaning the water. So I'm taking tomorrow off. Workout on my own, go to the chiropractor for an adjustment, prepare my food for the next few days and start packing.

I also sold my tubs of Lana's Egg Whites, so I will be ordering more. Such a great deal for people who use egg whites. I got them from her and sell them for $30 so they save the shipping cost. I will get to add my eggs and protein shakes back into my diet after this show since I am now lean again. Then I can just fine-tune for the following shows.

HELL WEEK - "Miracle Week"

So it is the Sunday before the competition. This is when we start playing with our carbs and drinking tons of water. It is SO crazy! I usually take them out today....but I was behind. I need a "miracle".  Coach told me the only way to make it was to take out my carbs. OK! Call me masochistic, but I will do what I need to to make it happen! I did not come all this way to fail. So when people complain about their diet to me right now, I'm not very understanding. But when my girls complain, I can totally relate because I have done it ALL. I did something I NEVER do and bought fat-burners to get through the day. If not, I wouldn't be able to get out of bed with no carbs. But today I am hitting the wall hard. As per the instructions I upped the dosage....and then fell asleep! Craziness!

So far my nails are done, we got our hair done yesterday, and our makeup the Saturday before, so really just need to pack. I got a new roller suitcase for my comp stuff and sponges for the ProTan and GemTac glue for the stones that have come off my suit.

It's hard with all the stress in life, the holidays etc. I started out with a team of 5 girls. Things happen and people don't always make it. Times are tough, people lose jobs, travel, get sick etc. So now there are two of us actually competing. We were a little down at first, but we are doing this for ourselves. And we have accomplished a lot! Cori is still coming and it's actually gonna be awesome because she can see first-hand how everything goes the day of a comp. Also, she can help us and I'm VERY relieved about that! I am excited for her to do my hair! Also the show is earlier as it is part of the Expo and sharing the stage with other events so we can actually SHOWER and THEN go eat and continue out at night looking hott and being CLEAN!!

I am documenting my prep for this show, so if you would like to see more, check out my YouTube Channel at:
www.youtube.com/coachnict

Things to do:
Full body shave/Jantana hair remover
Cook Food
Protan: Wed, Thurs, Fri night
Pack
Tanners, makeup, suits, heels, FitStars Warm-ups
REST!

Group Ex Instructin' ain't easy!

I LOVE MY JOB! No better job than getting paid to workout! The fact that people come to the gym to take my class humbles me and I am constantly trying to learn and improve to give them what I can with the time they are spending with me. But I don't think a lot of people know what goes into all of it.

When I went through my MINOR in college to learn how to become a Group Ex Instructor (dual track minor mind you, with Personal Training) there were a lot of things to go over.
EDUCATION - I had to take courses in Anatomy, Physiology, a Physiology Lab where I learned how to take measurements and performs tests etc. We had internships in both club and rehab settings. I taught a portion of a class at Gold's Gym in Santa Barbara, I worked a quarter at a Cardiac Stage III Rehab facility at a community center, I interned another quarter at a Senior Fitness facility with Aqua Rehab. So when people take a 2-day cert...well, you may imagine how I feel. On top of that, many feel they don't NEED a Group Ex cert. REALLY?! Group Ex and Personal Training are NOT the same. The Liability Insurance alone is different.
MUSIC - You have music selection. Their are copyrights and instructors have been SUED because they played an artist's music in their class! The club will NOT protect you. That is why there are companies such as Power Music, Dynamix, Yes Music, etc that create either remade or remixed music so that you can use as they have paid for the copyrights for this purpose. There are BPM(beats per minute). Have you ever taken a class where something just felt....off? Step or dance where you're body is moving at a different time that the instructor? I have found myself off the beat many times. But I can make adjustments to get back on. Some, especially trainers or uneducated instructors, will have their class do sets of 10, not understanding that music is in 32count phrases so you must work in sets of 8. Also, there are different speeds for certain types of classes. It is unsafe to do a class such as Step, or Kickboxing at high speed as the risk of falling, slipping or otherwise injuring someone increases. There are also equipment safety concerns.
SAFETY - Using a Bosu, I've seen instructors have the class step on the flat side of the Bosu. You do not know the level of each participant nor are you able to spot them, especially in a large class. Funny enough, BOSU started printing a note on the bottom that its not to be used that way in Group Ex settings.
PROTECTING YOURSELF - We were taught NEVER to teach without a Mic. Last week, I taught SEVEN classes, no mic. Instructors also used to teach a TON of classes. We have learned how much it wears the body down. I currently teach 3) Cycling classes/week. I have learned Pilates and Aqua so that I can teach other types of classes without wearing down my body.
BEING PREPARED - I work at multiple clubs. I have learned their stereos, mics, and lack thereof are across the board.  I carry spare batteries, (AA & 9v), Ipod, ipod charger and CD's. You should be prepared for anything.

Now, the personal part. The ups are that you can't 'miss' your workout, it's scheduled in, AND you get paid. The down, is that you can be having the WORST day and you can't miss your workout lol. So some days, your world can literally be crashing down around you. .and you gotta just SUCK IT UP, put a HUGE smile on your face, and give them the workout they are there for. They are there for YOU to motivate THEM. I try to make sure I listen more than I talk, and I smile. At everyone. And some days, you get that one person. The person that interrupts you in the middle of class to question your music and tell you it's "not doing it for me", even though it's one of your most popular Cycling rides. Then they proceed to perform their own personal stretching routine in front of the class as you are coaching the class through a very hard climb. Then they leave before class is over. And then THEY complain to you at the front desk. And I SMILE. because that is what I do. Do I get upset? YES! Do I check in with my class to make sure they don't feel the same way? OH YEAH! I have great classes and they know me over all the years I've been there. I had one lady tell me once, "just in case you see me leave, it's because I just can't stand your voice." I smiled and said, 'oh'...What do you say to that??? lol She proceeded to make horrible noises to similate what I sound like to her. I smile. I'm speechless. People are rude. You have no idea what someone else is going through.

I love my job. But I'm human. I have feelings. I come in and try to be peppy even on the worst days. That's why it's my job. But man....I could never treat someone like that. If I take someone else's class I try to be supportive, even if I don't love it.  I teach when I'm sick, I teach when I'm carb deleting for a show sometimes. Because I don't want my class to ever miss their workout. They are what cheers me up at the end of the day, and the negatives are few and far between. So next time you have a great instructor, that lifts your day and gives you a great smile, give them some love. We appreciate it!! ;) xo

Prep Time - Makeup! (2 weeks out)

Well, here we go! We are having posing practice with Robin once a week until the show. Last week we went to Max Muscle Blossom Hill and saw Phil Heath. Today after posing we went to MAC to get our makeup done. Next week after posing we will be getting our hair cut and colored. The pampering is such a nice change from the beatings we've been giving ourselves at the gym! Enough to pick up our spirits and start getting excited for our "girls weekend" ;)

On Stage
Back Stage
Now many shows have people on site that you can contract/hire to do your hair or makeup or tanning. This can cost up to about $150 each. Last July for San Jose I hired a friend to do my makeup and it looked Awesome, but I can't always afford this, especially when looking at multiple shows. So I tan myself and do my own makeup and hair. When competing in a larger shows, or Nationals, hiring others is a must to compete at that level. So I go to MAC and make an appointment with an artist. It is VERY hard to explain what we do. So I go with my girls, and I bring a few photos of what we look like on and off stage(see above), and the Dream Tan bronzer so they get an idea just HOW DARK we will be! Otherwise they may just give you one shade darker than your natural color lol.

Going over the color chart
Dream Tan on the bottom right

Now, you're going to want STAGE makeup, so SUPER dark! As Alicia Marie once said to us at Savage Camp, "You will look scary to school children up close!" hahahaha

Fake eyelashes are DEFINITELY a must. No matter how great you think yours are, from way up on stage under all those lights, you will need the help. I got MAC #48 lashes, nice and full. Lashes are the absolute LAST thing you put on. You must use a liquid or powder for eyeliner (NO PENCIL) so that the glue from the lashes will hold. Curl your own eyelashes and add mascara, then apply the lashes and comb them together with an eyelash comb. I never put mascara on my 'falsies' or curl them. If you take good care of them, (don't shove them around, and always place them back in the container as you got them) you can use them for about 7 shows.

Once you're done, your makeup artist can draw a color chart for you showing you the colors & brushes used, where they are used and even the order to apply it. In these pics we found a dark foundation (Pro Longwear Foundation NW45) but then took it off and put a natural tone on to look normal for the rest of our day.

Now the makeup goes to the jawline and feathered up into the hairline. Your tanning gets feathered up to the jawline and then they should hopefully meet and blend. For lips, I was taught to use a 'plum' color, I use 'O' by MAC and I think this time I'll use some gloss over it. Now remember, this makeup is going to be on for a VERY long time, so use a primer, and set spray and bring your makeup with you for touch ups. The best thing is to go to the show COMPLETELY ready. You never know the venue, the lighting, availability of mirrors, outlets, etc. So I go to registration ready. I am up early around 5-6am, and ready for Athlete Brief & Check-in at 8am. Pre-judging usually starts at 10am and we end up on stage around 11-12pm for Figure or 1pm depending on the size of the show. Then we break from around 3pm-5:30pm. Come back, Finals starts around 6/6:30pm (all over again) and hopefully out by 11pm. ;)

Closer...

Well, The Eye said I looked better but she wants some BIG changes by next Saturday. I need to do another hour of cardio tonight so that'll bring my total to 5hrs this week. Of course, I also subbed 4hrs of Aqua and while not a workout persay, I definitely was actively moving around and my shoulders are sore!
Im definitely hitting the wall and a bit down today. Ups & downs. Gonna go get my cardio in at Ray's before I have posing practice with Robin. After the girls' session tomorrow we are goin to MAC for our makeup prep and next Saturday getting our hair done so that'll be exciting and hopefully help me feel ready. But the legs def more defined then before. Lines, triangles, hehe ;)
Here you can see my crookedness show in the shoulders & waist.
SAME weight. Holding due to lack of sleep & stress. But much more definition! Crazy how the body works!

This has been a CRAZY Busy week! Saturday after posing practice me and a few of the girls went to Max Muscle and stood in line to see Phil Heath. He is awesome, and seems so down to earth. We wore our team gear and took some great pics!

The girls are looking great, huge improvements! However, I was not happy with my own progress. I felt like I looked better a few lbs ago. I felt like i lost my muscle and was all fat. ugh. Fatima gave me the option of upping my cardio or taking out carbs. Well, this ANTI-cardio girl chose cardio for the first time. I'm cranky without carbs and I had 4 Aqua classes to sub on top of my regular 3-4 classes / week so I knew I'd need them. (Check out that crazy schedule below!) And im doing ok.  I've done 1hr of cycling each day. I'm definitely beat! My legs are J-E-L-L-O. Of course, my weight is the same. Go Figure! I drop quick. But I'm definitely leaner. I was mad that my jeans still fit tight, lol, but then i looked in the mirror and saw the hams and ass I did NOT have before and I'm ok with that ;) With the stress and lack of sleep i've had lately, my body is weighing heavier. I know it'll be lower once I get a good night's sleep. I feel good, but we'll see what Coach thinks at my check-in tomorrow. I still need to be leaner, and I'm already thinking of the next show, keeping it lean and trying to even out areas and put on a bit more muscle. I'm getting there though. I have more legs, more shoulders, I think in 2 more weeks, I'll be ok. I'd like to be MORE than ok so I'll do what I need to.

I am excited though, because I have a few people to meet at the LA FitExpo-another competitor I met through Twitter from my town, and Lester from Vizion Wear that has made suits for 2 of the girls, and will be doing mine next for later on in the season.

Hopefully I'll have some good news & pics tomorrow! ;)

Ironman Mag Naturally - 3 weeks out

So I had my check-in and took pics. I know I'm behind. Fatima says I'll be ok, but I'm mad at myself. Of course, I NEVER would have tried to diet through the holidays, but since they are over its been easier. I doubled my cardio (not much for most but from 2hrs to 4hrs / week). And I've been on my 3wks out plan for the last month so aside from the cheats, I've been super clean. And have been good one week, lol. So far I lost the weight from the cheat, +3lbs so I am 128lbs, 17.6%BF. I took pics and felt like I had less muscle and more fat than my last pics at the higher weight. Thank god I have a coach to filter for me.

I've had a lot of stress at work, and my Oma has been in the hospital this week. She's going to be needing a pace-maker. She doesn't really know whats going on. Other than my SF mints, while I'm visiting, I haven't cheated. SO I'm feeling good about that and I just keep telling myself what I tell others: "Just do the work, and it will happen". It's hard, and I totally understand the mentality....people feel hopeless so they cheat, and because they've screwed up they make it worse. But you gotta stick with it. I made this commitment, and I am NOT a quitter. I knew I'd have to work harder when I made the choice to cheat. The GREAT thing is, I'm an instructor! SO I picked up another permanent cycling class at Bally's, so now I'm getting PAID for 3hrs of that cardio a week! Also what that means is its scheduled so there's no way i can miss it. All I need to do is squeeze another hour in(I have another instructor who's class I'm taking cuz she's awesome and I'm learning from it!) so then if needed another 30mins here and there on the stairs. Again, I drop weight quick, so many of my clients need to do a lot more cardio depending on how their body responds.

I also launched my YouTube Channel this week. So far I have my Intro video and one on my ProTan process. Helps a lot for showing my girls how it's done. I can't paint them all! ;)

2012 Goals - 6 months to greatness!

Firstly, I want to say this is not me being cocky. It's kinda tongue-in-cheek, but also half a dream. In the past I have competed, each time trying to place. Now I have set my sights higher. I never had a one-on-one coach to help and guide me. It has made a HUGE difference in having that support.  I have built a network and technology is such that I am able to really learn and do more than I thought I could. I have made a lot of progress and have never looked this way at the weight i've been(my heavier weight.) I have trained VERY hard before and not looked like this. I attribute it to an AWESOME coach in Fatima and i have been using Advocare products. It's amazing, everyone that uses Advocare or tries it has such great results! My family and friends practically 'sell' it back to me!  I gained up to 140 having 'fun' with food after the SJ show. I lose quick and I gain quick! So at 131, i have cut abs, legs, awesome! I competed at 116 at SJ so I'm so interested to see what I'll be for this season. So with training clients and competing myself, I have had to set an example and set my sights higher.

Last year because I placed 3rd in my class at NPC San Jose in Figure, I qualified to go to USA's in Vegas(Nationals). I have decided to do it. I am very intimidated, but I've competed long enough, I need to give MYSELF a chance. I don't think I doubted doing San Jose again, it will be my 4th time at that show and hope to place higher. I decided to do NPC Contra Costa. That was the very first show I did, never having seeing a competition before, and it is HUGE. I was....108lbs. (9%BF). I got SLAMMED. There were 13 or 14 in my height class. The next year I went back for another beating. There were MORE. So I want to take on that show, and I aim to place(Top 5). My girl Cori Ann brought up some shows with great opportunity; Ironman Magazine Naturally with the FitExpo, and they also have the West Coast with Team ratings in June.

My goals are to place higher (1st or 2nd), to Place at Contra Costa, and to Rank at USA. USA ranks the top 15 of about 30. Everyone else is numbered as 16. After that, I will be OFF! This is a VERY ambitious schedule, and if i do it i will beat my previous record. In 2005 I aimed for 8 shows and hit 5. I have a lot more driving me this time.

Here is my schedule:

Jan 28th            3wks - LA Ironman Mag/FitExpo
March 24th     11wks - Sac Gov Cup (My Bday is the 20th!)
May 5th          17wks - Contra Costa
June 23rd        24wks - Ironman Mag/Team
July 14th         27wks - San Jose/Fit Expo
July 27&28     29wks - USA (LV)
OFF ;)
 I think I have a shot...what do you think? ;)
